Cinzia Pica (2008, ED), assistant professor at Assumption College, received the 2012 Distinguished Education Research Article Award from the Association for Childhood Education International Association. Pica's article “Children's perceptions of interracial friendships in a multiethnic school context”, which was based on her dissertation, was published in the Journal of Research in Childhood Education (2011). William Cosby (M.Ed. 1972, Ed.D. 1976) and Camille Cosby, (M.Ed. 1980, Ed.D. 1992) attended an April 2012 ceremony held to name the academy’s community center in their honor. Mr. and Mrs. Cosby are donors to the Academy’s scholarship program. The school which serves mostly low-income high school students was founded by Mother Mary Elizabeth Lange, who established the Oblate Sisters of Providence in Baltimore more than 180 years ago. Camille Cosby attended a now-closed school in Washington, D.C., also founded by the Oblate Sisters. Submitted on May 16 2012. Add Comment | Comments (0) Evelyn Brooks (1997) Evelyn Brooks (1997, ED) was selected by ZERO TO THREE for its Leaders for the 21st Century Fellowship, “a prestigious program that connects, enriches, and inspires professionals dedicated to advancing the health and development of very young children.” Ridgeway is a child development and mental health manager at the Early Head Start Program at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Add Comment | Comments (0) Garrett McAuliffe (1985) Garrett McAuliffe (1985, ED) was named the Outstanding Professor of the Year for 2011 at Old Dominion University. He also published his sixth book, the “Handbook of Counselor Preparation: Constructivist and Developmental Approaches." His book, “Culturally Alert Counseling” is being released in its second edition in the fall of 2012, along with his six-part training video series “Key Practices in Culturally Alert Counseling: Working with Lesbian and Gay Youth, Latinos, African Americans, Asians, and Conservative Christian Clients.” Submitted on May 16 2012. We have recently worked with a coalition of principals from Kuwait ... on leadership and change. An early advocate of early childhood education, his experience includes teaching at Bank Street College in New York City and professorships at Ohio University and Syracuse University. Bemak also shared that he was invited in 2011 by the Ministry of Education in Taiwan and hosted by National Taiwan Normal University to research school counseling and give a number of presentations throughout the country on cross-cultural counseling, social justice counseling, and counseling refugee and immigrant populations. They currently reside in Watertown, MA. The couple's wedding was attended by a host of proud UMass alumni. Cleve E. Willis (former Dean of College of Natural Resources and the Environment) blessed the couple with one of his poems, and Bernie Morzuch (father of the bride and professor in Resource Economics) danced up a storm. The couple honeymooned in the Berkshires and the Cape. Michaella is health research analyst at Mathematica Policy Research in Cambridge. Anissa Talantikite (2009, SBS) has been named a 2011 Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellow. The Pickering Fellowship, funded by the U.S. Department of State, will provide support for her completion of a graduate degree at Tufts University as she prepares academically and professionally to enter the United States Foreign Service.The United States’ international representatives must have dedication, initiative, integrity, cultural adaptability, ability to communicate well, and a thorough intellectual background. The 40 new Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellows named this summer have demonstrated promise across this range of areas crucial to United States Foreign Service Officers. This fall, Anissa will join this diverse new class—20 Pickering Undergraduate Fellows and 20 Pickering Graduate Fellows—in their journey to represent America in world affairs. Brett Wagner (2009, SOM) is currently living and working in Auckland, New Zealand. Recently he attended a semi pro basketball game with fellow alumnus Matthew Perry that featured former UMass Basketball Stand-out Anthony Gurley '11. The two alumni made an effort to go watch Anthony play and support him after they found out he signed with a team in New Zealand. Add Comment | Comments (0) Debra (Belkin) Rademacher (1988) Debra (Belkin) Rademacher (1988, SOM), a three-time All-America soccer player, has been inducted into the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and Museum. Belkin played on the U.S. Women's National team from 1986-92, and while at UMass led the Minutewomen to the NCAA championship game in 1987, where they lost to N. Carolina 1-0. Over her four-year career at UMass, the Minutewomen had an overall record of 65-9-4. During her junior season, Belkin joined the U.S. National Team. Submitted on Jan 17 2012. Alison Haskell (1993, CNS) has had a named award created in her honor by the Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation. After graduating from UMass Amherst, she joined the Fish and Wildlife Service as a Wildlife Research Specialist in the Division of Federal Aid. She left this position in 2003 to become the first ever Federal Coordinator for Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (PARC). Unfortunately, her tenure with PARC was tragically shortened due to a diagnosis of ovarian cancer. In 2006, after a valiant battle, Alison succumbed to the disease. Members of PARC aim to keep her memory alive through the annual Alison Haskell Excellence in Herpetofaunal Conservation Award. Submitted on Apr 1 2011.
