President Gives “Red Hot” Convocation Address
In her 30-minute address to over 800 faculty, staff and students, including two former Stony Brook University Presidents, President Shirley Strum Kenny explained why we’re “Red Hot,” by ticking off the University’s progress, development, and standing as an elite academic institution.

Journalism School Establishes News Literacy Center
Stony Brook’s School of Journalism has established the nation’s first News Literacy Center designed to educate current and future news consumers on how to judge the credibility and reliability of news. Visiting Professor Jim Klurfeld, and Newsday Editorial Page Editor, was named the Interim Director. More »

New Provost Appointed
“Eric Kaler is just the right person at the right time to lead the development and expansion of our academic programs in the 21st century,” said Dr. Shirley Strum Kenny. Kaler was formerly the Dean of the University of Delaware School of Engineering, which has consistently ranked among the best in the nation since he was named Dean in 2000. More »

Alumnus Funds Study Center For Student Athletes
The new Thomas and Nicolina Nasti Academic Hall was formally dedicated on August 29, thanks to a generous donation from Richard and Maura Nasti in honor of his parents. “Stony Brook has given my family a tremendous opportunity for which I’m grateful,” said Mr. Nasti, who graduated summa cum laude from Stony Brook with a double major in economics and political science. SBU Medical Center Unveils Robotic Surgery System
The “da Vinci” robot, a first on Long Island and New York City, enables surgeons to perform complex procedures without large incisions. Patients may experience less pain, blood loss, and scarring resulting from procedures performed with the da Vinci robot. They also experience shorter recovery times and better outcomes, compared to conventional surgery. More »
